Our why

Talent starts the game. Foundation wins it.

The numbers below are not background. They are the reason this organisation exists.

Read from here to the end and the case builds in six steps: where it starts, what it costs, what we do about it, what we believe, where we actually are, and what happens next.

01Where it starts

Eight out of every ten

Out of every ten children who finish Grade 4 in South Africa, eight cannot read for meaning, in any language. Not read slowly. Not read with help. Cannot read for meaning at all.

That is eight out of ten futures already narrowing before a child turns ten.

Eight.

out of every ten

A child who cannot read for meaning at nine does not catch up quietly. The gap widens, and it shows up in the subject that decides the most.

02What it costs

Best in the country, still not close to good enough

The Western Cape posted the highest provincial mathematics scores in the country in TIMSS 2023, and both grades still sit below the international centre point of 500.

Mathematics decides, more than any other subject, whether a young person walks through the door of a university, a technical college, or a stable trade. Lose it in Grade 9 and a large part of a life gets decided at fourteen.

If the cost is set this early, the response has to start early too, and it has to be something a child will actually turn up for.

03What we do about it

Why we started here, with sport

We did not start The Long Game because we believe sport fixes any of this on its own. It does not, and we are careful never to claim it does.

  1. 01

A child will show up for sport on a freezing Saturday morning in a way they will rarely show up for extra maths on a Tuesday afternoon. That is not a flaw in the child. It is just true of being young.

  2. 02

So we use the thing a child already wants to do - structured, coached, safe - as the reason they keep arriving.

  3. 03

That sustained attendance buys enough contact hours for the things that actually change a trajectory: literacy, numeracy, a fed body, an adult who checks in by name.

  4. 04

We called it The Long Game because none of this happens in a term, or even a year. It takes the whole shape of a childhood.

The method only holds if the belief underneath it does. This is the belief.

04What we believe

Person first.

We do not develop athletes. We develop the person who becomes capable of anything, sport included.

A child who is fed, safe, and believed in can learn. A child who can learn can build a mind for AI, for business, for leadership, a mind for life.

And a child with that foundation can walk onto any field, in any code, and compete like they have already won the hardest game there is: the long game of becoming who they are capable of being.

Believing it is the easy part. Here is exactly how small we still are.

05Where we actually are

Why here, and why now, honestly

We are starting in the Western Cape on purpose. Not because the need is smaller here, the numbers above show it is not, but because this is the province where we can build something properly before we try to build it everywhere.

We are not going to tell you we have already changed hundreds of lives. We have not, yet. What we can tell you is that we have built a programme that measures itself honestly and treats a child's own baseline, not a slogan, as the only starting point worth trusting.

Small is the honest answer today. It is not the plan.

06What happens next

The road from five scholars

Nothing here happens in a term. This is the order we intend to build in, and we would rather be held to it than to a promise.

This term

Baseline every scholar, run the ten week block, re-test against that same child's starting point, and publish what the numbers actually say.

Next year

Hold the founding cohort, add scholars only as fast as we can keep the adult to child ratio and the measurement honest.

The long game

A second site, once the first one works well enough that we would be comfortable being audited on it. Not before.

The invitation

If you are a parent

This is a programme built to hold your child for years, not a term.

If you fund or partner

This is a model built to show you exactly what changed, and exactly how sure we are of it.

If you are neither

You have read this far, which probably means you already understand why this matters more than we could explain to you.

Either way, welcome to the long game. It is going to take a while. That is precisely the point.
